Shopping at Old Navy

I have a list of must-haves from Old Navy so I thought I'd share a few things I'm considering.  The ballet flats are a MUST!  Every season I find the styles I have to have and I'm excited to see the paisley print (which reminds me of something I'd find at J. Crew) and the tortoise print that looks like something I was eyeing by Stuart Weitzman.  Also, every year Old Navy has a great cargo vest and jacket you need to nab...so check out the options:)

Guest Post: Vintage Defined: tips for shopping and wearing vintage

I'm excited to share a post from my dear friend Andrea that I worked with in my pre-mommy life:)  She is a girl who knows how to find great vintage pieces.  Check out her blog and see how she's got the retro vibe down at Fashions and Fancies.

When I referred to my 1960’s wedding dress as “vintage,” I inadvertently offended my
grandmother. “Vintage, that’s not vintage!” she reprimanded.  I guess when you have lived through the
1960’s you don’t like the implication that you yourself might be “vintage” as well.  I apologized profusely and tried my best to explain that I simply meant it was from a previous decade.  I suppose that “vintage” is a very broad term; limited to not one definition, but many.  Though in my personal opinion, vintage as it pertains to clothing, is anything older than twenty years (actually I would even consider some early 1990’s clothing as vintage).  My husband put it an interesting way, “Yeah it’s like music: anything older than twenty years is considered classic… crazy, Nirvana is classic rock now!"  I suppose perspective is everything, and when you realize that “vintage” and “classic” are completely different from “old,” you understand that a little age or wear on something doesn’t make it less valuable, but rather more unique and precious.  This is why I love vintage clothing.  I love learning the story behind it… and then putting my own story in front of it!

Here are some of my tips for shopping vintage:

Decide on your era- Before you go shopping for vintage items, look through the current fashion
magazines and see what the designers are doing.  I read a wonderful quote recently in The New York
Times that said, “The hardest thing to realize in fashion is that the future lies in the past.  The second
hardest thing is to forget the past.”  It is inevitable that the trends of previous generations will come back around in one way or another.  The Louis Vuitton Fall 2010 collection evoked the 1950’s with its ultra-feminine silhouettes, and the Prada Fall 2011 collection went mod with graphic prints and drop waists.  This fall, designers seem to be drawing inspiration from the seventies, sixties and even as far back as the Victorian and Baroque ages (not that you’ll be able to find anything that vintage while shopping!).

Choose your destination- There are many places to go for vintage clothing.  Most cities have at least one fabulous little shop devoted to selling strictly vintage clothing.  These local boutiques are great because they are usually owned by someone with a passion for vintage who is more than happy to help you find what you are looking for.  You can also go online and spend hours browsing EBay and Etsy. Personally however, I like to find my vintage at thrift stores.  Maybe it’s the treasure seeker in me, but I enjoy having to search it out, working for my reward.  If you’re going to try your luck at a thrift store, do a little research first.  Familiarize yourself with the popular styles, brands and designers of that time.  This way you won’t be totally overwhelmed when you step through the doors of a giant Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc.  For example, if I wanted to find some cool 1970’s pieces, I would first Google (ahh, the convenience of the internet) something such as “clothing designers of the 1970’s” which would lead me to Halston, Yves Saint Laurent and Diane Von Furstenberg among others. Now you most likely will not find a Halston original at a thrift store, but you will know the sort of thing you are looking for …because it is very important to remember that the seventies were more than just bell-bottoms and platforms!

Look for quality- Clothing that is well made shouldn’t look really old even if it is vintage.  An item may have been worn before, but be on the lookout for excessive wear (stains, holes, pilling).  I’m not
saying that you’ll find things in perfect condition (especially the further back in time you go: 1920’s, 30’s, 40’s), just steer clear of anything that is literally falling apart.

Don’t be afraid to tailor- Because vintage pieces are so unique, you won’t always find the exact right
fit- that’s okay.  It simply allows you the opportunity to custom tailor pieces so that they look made
especially for you!

Add your own touches- Part of the fun of wearing vintage, at least for me, is the ability to mix it up.  I
enjoy making vintage modern.  You don’t have to stick with one style; you can combine a cute 1950’s
floral dress with a studded belt or some cowboy boots.  You can wear 1960’s cat eye sunglasses with
skinny jeans and a graphic tee.  You can even pair some 1980’s high waisted acid-wash jeans with a
cute crop top and heels.  Mix and match decades.  Have fun, be creative and design your own personal
collection!

I believe that vintage, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.  So however you choose to define it,
wear your vintage with pride and an understanding that the future is nothing without the past!

Start planning your girl's day now during Spa Week!  The appointments fill up quickly.  And these discounted services are still grade A!  I know people think when you go for a discounted service you get less than amazing service. Guest Bloggers while I'm on "maternity leave"

Ok friends...I'll be having the twins latest this coming Monday.  Until I'm back on my feet I'll be having guest bloggers on Fashionalities.  So, stay tuned I'll be back and check out my pinterest, twitter and facebook and see what's going on with me in my off time.  I also have a fun project with Land's End Canvas I'll be posting soon.  So check it out:)

Preggers Pause: What I'll still be using after the twins come

It's almost time to have these babies and I'm getting rid of everything that says I was preggers like my tired, worn out flip flops and the couple of pieces I actually bought that were maternity that are just DONE.  Except for a couple of items that I'm holding on to.  Here are a few things that I say can be used/worn even if you aren't preggers:

Beauty:

Zoe Organics: I won a couple of the products in a Citrus Lane giveaway and instantly fell in love!  It's all natural and smells yummy!

Mama Mio: I received this as a gift with my first pregnancy and fell in LOVE!  This pregnancy I realized that Mama Mio Omega Body Buff Exfoliator can be used for the body and for the face!  It smells so good and it feels great on the face too!  I'll be getting my refill soon:)

Fashion:

Isabella Oliver:  I was offered to receive any piece I wanted from the label and decided on the Eva Knit Waistcoat that felt like I could wear both during my pregnancy and after.  I hate the idea of paying for or even getting something for free and getting rid of it after the pregnancy is over.  I think this piece will be just as cute after and can't wait to incorporate it into my everyday wardrobe.  Side note: This will also be a great piece while I'm breastfeeding.

Hatch Collection:  I honestly haven't purchased anything yet...but, their spring/summer line has gone on sale and I'm honestly just waiting around until it hits the price point where I'm ready to give in:)  I've been writing about them since I got preggers:)  Stay tuned for which item I end up getting and how I rock it!

Just saying: The 6 Best Mommy Brands You are Going to Want to ROCK Right Now

Since becoming a mommy I've started to go through my closet and really consider what will work for me now and what I just need to let go of.  During the process, I've also been finding brands that really speak to the ever evolving moi:)  These are all brands that are designed by mommy's and I think keep moms looking fashionable, but are still functional.  The great thing is, anyone can wear any of these amazing labels.  Are there any you would recommend?

Tucker by Gaby Basora
Amazing dresses and now offers pants and shirts.  LOVE the prints and how you can dress up or down the dresses she designs.

TWO New York

I love my caftan by TWO NYC!  So comfy!  Great for travel, lounging at home, or if you are like me everyday wear:)

LemLem NYC
The model who designs these pieces goes to Ethiopia to have them designed.  I can't wait to own a dress!

Ace & Jig
I just learned about this label who used to design La Rok!  Now that they are mommies they are designing this line which I think has a mother-earthy vibe I'm digging.

Hatch Collection
This is a popular maternity line that women in NYC and probably elsewhere are also rocking.  They just came out with their fall line and I'm in LOVE!  Their spring line is on sale so check out the sale section.

Cleobella
This line is so cool!  Everything from home to accessories and clothes with an earthy feel.  Great prices too!

Mommy kicks

Mommy Kicks

It's all about being cool and comfy when you become a mom...since I've slowly traded in the 5" heels I wanted to share what I'm replacing them with.  Still fun, stylish shoes that I can easily run after my toddler with.

Replace the flip flops with Jack Rogers Navajo sandals. The epitome of boho chic that anyone from a sorority sister to a grandmother are rocking.  So you know they are comfy!

Worishofer sandals sold at stores like Urban Outfitters and Madewell so it makes me overlook the fact that these are made for older women with feet problems:)

Avarcas are perfect for the family!  I have a pair and they get better while worn in...next I'll be getting a pair for each of the kids and the hubby!

Marais has the cutest low-heel on trend shoes!  I bought a few pairs from the Summer sale at Urban Outfitters...they are mainly sold out there now...but, there are still a few out there here and here.

Saltwater sandals are cute because you can wear them with your kids!  I LOVE that!
The hidden wedge sneaker is the perfect sneaker for the moms who thought they'd NEVER be caught wearing sneakers besides to workout!  There ar so many options out there right now.  I just found this option at Express for ONLY $60!
What shoes are you rocking fellow fashionista moms?
