Girlfriend's Got Style
Fashionalities asked "Girlfriends" Costume Designer, Stacy Beverly a couple of questions about her background in the fashion industry, what to expect from her future projects and where she buys the clothes we love to watch on "Girlfriends."
How did you get started in the industry?
I started out as a production assistant on an episodic television show about 8 years ago. Then I started day checking on the "Jamie Foxx Show." I attended FIDM in Downtown Los Angeles.
Which shows and celebs do you currently work with? Who have you worked with in the past?
Right now I'm working with the casts of "Girlfriends" and " The Game." In the past I worked with Vivica A. Fox on "The Starlet."
How did you start working on Girlfriends?
I started out first season with "Girlfriends" as the key costumer. The second season Mara Brock-Akil, our Executive Producer was looking for someone who could give the show an edge and turn it into a more fashion driven show. I prepared story boards for each character, presented my ideas and was offered the position as Costume Designer. I've been head of the "Girlfriends" wardrobe department every since.
Will the new show, "The Game", have similar looks as "Girlfriends"?
I think "The Game" will have a totally different flavor. It will have a slightly younger look. The guys are more the focal point The show is based on athletes, their families and the whole sub culture of football. However they will be very stylish as well, and besides, Melanie (Tia Mowry) is related to Joan so you know the fashion runs through the veins.
Who are your favorite designers?
Personally I like Costume National, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci and Balenciaga. They all cut their clothes long and slim and the fabrics and tailoring are amazing.
Where do you get inspiration from when you are styling? Either on the "Girlfriends" set or projects in general?
All things inspire me...people, life, architecture, shapes, colors, culture, travel, etc.
Where do you shop for Girlfriends?
I shop for my shows everywhere, Ventura Blvd., Beverly Hills, Downtown LA, West La, Beverly Blvd., 3rd St, Santa Monica, Melrose, Malibu, internet, etc. sometimes even the swap meet.
What are your thoughts on style/fashion in general?
Fashion and styling for me is essential and very necessary. It's important and distinctive. It's a way for everyone to express themselves without even saying a word. I love it! I think a person’s style says a lot about the individual.
How would you describe your style?
My own personal style I would say is pretty eclectic. I really can't categorize it. I dress according to my body type, the occasion and how I'm feeling. It's important to wear what looks good on you and try not to follow trends. And it's okay to spend a little more money on staples and something nice for yourself that's going to last, but make good decisions on quality merchandise.
New episodes of "Girlfriends" and "The Game" will be airing this Fall.
